The finanace minister in the previous cabinet is the freshly elected chancellor of the federal republic of Germany, voted into office by th e combined socila-liberal majority in the German lower house, the Bunde stag. He thus succeeds Willy Brandt who recently stepped down. We prese nt some of the highlights of the political career of this son of an ass istant master who was born in Hamburgurg on december 23 1918: joined th e social democratic party of Germany (SPD) in 1946, became a member of the Bundestag as an SPD delgate (1953-1962), then was senator of intern al affairs in the state government of Hamburg (until 1965), returned to the Bonn legislature (in 1965), assumed the chairmanship of the SPD pa rilamentary group (1966-1969). His first cabinet role came as adefence minister in 1969, whence he went on to become the economics and finance minister (1972) in the first Brandt-Scheel government, and finally too k over only the finance portfolio in the second Brant-Scheel cabinent ( 1972)
