Usually take serious matters very seriously, but they seldomly take themselves very seriously. These were among the words of thanks express ed by Walter Scheel in Aachen where the venerable carnival association of the ancient Imperial city had just selected the German Foreign Minis ter as the 25th Knight of "the order to Combat Beastly Seriousness". Sc heel also explicitly called for more humour in politics in his message of thanks to the assembled carnival madcaps, and immediately presented them with a sample of the tidbits worth promoting.
